Day by Day

Day 1

Overnight: San Juan

The tour coordinator will greet everyone, and we will review the program schedule, emergency procedures and answer questions. After orientation we will set out with our tour coordinator to take a walk and explore the area around the hotel. At a restaurant, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner with a delicious set menu.

Day 2

Overnight: San Juan

After breakfast, we will take a bus to the Para la Naturaleza facilities in San Juan and then continue the visit to Old San Juan to get to know the most historic part of the island. Around noon, there will be a stop at a local restaurant to have a group lunch, and then continue to visit Old San Juan. Towards the end of the day, we will have dinner at a local restaurant and return to the hotel.

Day 3

Overnight: San Juan

We will set out with a local expert for a day trip to the Hacienda Buena Vista in the town of Ponce. During the day we will learn about the coffee plantation and we will get to know the Community of Marueño. We will stop for a group lunch and will return to San Juan late afternoon.

Day 4

Overnight: San Juan

 After breakfast, we will depart from the hotel by private bus for a visit to the Hacienda La Esperanza, a sugar cane plantation located in Manatí. We will learn about these facilities and the importance of this production for the national economy. We will stop for a group lunch, and in the afternoon, we will return to San Juan.

Day 5

Overnight: San Juan

After breakfast, we will depart by private bus to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico where we’ll enjoy a guided visit and learn about the works of art from the XVII century to the present. Then, we will have lunch together. After lunch, we will depart to the MAC (Contemporary Museum of Art) to enjoy the art of the last decades and will also have the opportunity to have an exchange with an artist. At the end, you can decide if you prefer to continue and explore the city on your own or return to the hotel. Your tour coordinator will be happy to offer suggestions.

Day 6

Overnight: San Juan

After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for a day trip to visit Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas, a town in the center of the island, a community self-management project that is committed to the appreciation and protection of natural, cultural and human resources. The visit includes a guided tour to visit different areas of interest of the place such as: their solar energy system, and their solar cinema, their hydroponic system, plant nursery, and will visit their butterfly garden and laboratory. We will also enjoy a demonstration on the toasting, grinding and packing of the coffee they cultivate, Madre Isla, a self-sufficient, organic coffee venture. Then, we will have lunch together in Adjuntas and we’ll visit the Bosque Escuela La Olimpia, a sustainable project belonging to the Casa Pueblo organization. After this visit, we will take the bus to return to San Juan. 

Day 7

Overnight: San Juan

In the morning the private bus will be waiting for us to go to the Cabachuelas Caves in Morovis, where we will explore the Las Cabachuelas Natural Reserve and discover ditches, caverns and a cave system with high ecological, cultural, historical and archaeological value. Petroglyphs, pictographs, the fossils of the sloth bear and the guabá are some of the attractions of these caves. After the visit to the cave, we’ll have lunch together and depart to Tortuguero lagoon in Vega Baja, one of the most important and valuable areas of the island. It is one of the largest freshwater bodies on the Island and the only one of its kind. It is distinguished by its great scenic beauty, ecological importance and its natural system rich in aquatic fauna and flora. After this visit we will return to San Juan.

Day 8

Overnight: San Juan

After breakfast at the hotel, we will meet with a local Natural Science Professor to have a lecture about Climate change and its repercussions  in Puerto Rico. Afterwards, we will depart by private bus to the Martín Peña Channel, a body of water in Santurce. There, we will visit the community of Martin Peña that was built on former wetlands bordering a mangrove canal where water no longer flows because of heavy sedimentation and the accumulation of years of illegally dumped trash. Due to the narrowing of the channel over time, the area is subject to frequent flooding, including raw sewage from buildings with insufficient sanitation. Then, we will depart to a restaurant and enjoy lunch together. Afterwards, you will enjoy a free afternoon to explore on your own.

Day 9

Overnight: Vieques

After an early breakfast, we will depart by private bus to Ceiba to take a ferry to Vieques island, located in the east side of Puerto Rico. Upon arrival at the island, we will check in at the hotel and have a quick walk around the surroundings, followed by a wonderful  lunch at a local restaurant. Then, we will visit the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and its community. We’ll have an early group dinner and depart to the coast to take a kayak and enjoy an authentic adventure in the Bioluminescent Bay of Vieques, one of the brightest in the world. The water is lit by dinoflagellates called Pyrodinium bahamense, tiny microorganisms that glow when touched.

Day 10

Overnight: San Juan

After breakfast at the hotel, we will continue our trip to Fortín Conde Mirasol, a fortress built in 1845 and we’ll learn about the history of the island. We will have lunch together around the area and afterwards we will depart to take a ferry to Ceiba, followed by a private bus to return to San Juan. We will meet again for the farewell dinner together.

Day 11

Transfer to the airport at a designated time.
